What does NWOT mean?

Also: New Without Tags

NWOT stands for New Without Tags. It describes a garment that has never been worn but no longer has its original retail tags, usually because they came off for a gift or were cut before the owner changed their mind. On the GradeThread scale NWOT anchors a 9 out of 10, one step below NWT.

How it's used in a listing

A Mercari listing reading “Free People sweater, NWOT, tried on once, tags removed” signals an unworn piece whose tags are gone, and the “tried on once” is the seller being straight about it.

How it maps to the grade scale

NWOT maps to a 9 on the GradeThread 1.0–10.0 scale: unworn like NWT (10), but without the tag that proves it, so the grade rests entirely on the garment. It sits above Excellent Used Condition (EUC, 8), which allows light wear.

NWOT — frequently asked

Is NWOT the same as like new?
Not quite. NWOT (New Without Tags) means never worn. “Like new” usually means worn a few times with no visible wear, which is closer to EUC (Excellent Used Condition). On the GradeThread scale NWOT is a 9 and EUC is an 8.
Why would a new item not have tags?
Gifts usually arrive with the tags removed, people cut tags off meaning to wear something and never do, and some sellers take tags off to photograph a garment flat. None of that changes the condition, which is why NWOT is graded on the garment rather than the paperwork.
What does BNWOT mean?
Brand New Without Tags. It is the same thing as NWOT with an extra word for emphasis: never worn, original tags gone. The B adds nothing a buyer can check, so judge it on the photos, and on the GradeThread scale it is graded exactly like NWOT, a 9.
